Canceled: the Fifth Statewide Mountain State Land Use Academy

Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting budgetary situation for local, state and federal governments, as well as universities, the WVULaw Land Use and Sustainable Development Land Clinic has made the difficult decision to cancel the Statewide Mountain State Land Use Academy. The event was scheduled for September 29-30 at Pipestem Resort State Park.

The Clinic regrets that we will not be able to gather in one place in 2020, but is working to find ways to continue to connect again in person.

First, the Clinic is excited to announce a new collaboration to bring online education to citizen planners across the state with the West Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association, a long-time partner with the Clinic and strong supporter of previous Statewide Mountain State Land Use Academies.

Now, the Clinic and the West Virginia Chapter of APA have joined forces with the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association, the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Planning Association, the Rural Planning Caucus of Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association to provide education for citizen planners and AICP planners across the region, and nationally.

Planning is underway for a five-part webinar series for late fall. More information on these webinars will be provided in the coming months, but Certification Maintenance (CM) credits will be offered for AICP planners and the webinars will be pertinent to citizen planners. We will also be able to access programming already produced by these other organizations. This collaboration presents a wonderful opportunity for communities across the state.

The Clinic is also contemplating webinars targeted specifically to West Virginia concerns. We have been working with communities throughout the state with respect to emergency powers and special considerations in operating under the present pandemic conditions. Moving forward, other issues will undoubtedly arise.

Finally, the Clinic is still available to help address specific community needs, as appropriate. If you have suggestions for webinars, or need education for your elected officials, planning commissioners or Board of Zoning Appeals members, please contact Jesse Richardson at or call him at 540-327-7508 (cell).
