Wheeling's North Main Street an "APA Great Place in America"

North Main Street in Wheeling has been named one of ten “Great Streets,” making it a 2009 Great Places in America honoree by the American Planning Association.

The APA’s flagship program celebrates places of exemplary character, quality, and planning. Places are selected annually and represent the gold standard in terms of having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for tomorrow.

This year, 10 neighborhoods, 10 streets, and 10 public spaces were honored.

Wheeling’s North Main Street was selected because of its concentration of mid- to late-19th century Victorian era homes and how new construction in the area has been made to integrate with the existing buildings to maintain the historic characteristic and architectural integrity of the neighborhood.
